Engine Failure Leaves Cargo Ship Adrift in Vats, Emergency Response Activated
On March 5, 2014, at 7:05 p.m., the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Southern Norway received an urgent notification regarding the cargo ship 'Rana Frakt'. The vessel experienced a critical engine failure while moored near Vats in Hordaland. Reports were relayed via Rogaland Radio, indicating that the ship was immobilized at Austre Bakholmen. In response to the hazardous weather conditions, MRCC promptly deployed two lifeboats, an ambulance vessel, and a Coast Guard ship to assist. Once the lifeboat from the Vats Station arrived at the distressed freighter, the crew, consisting of five members, was aided in regaining control of the situation. Simultaneously, another lifeboat and a Coast Guard vessel were en route from Bergen to provide additional support. Local emergency services, including firefighters and police from Vats, mobilized towards Austevollshella. By 8 p.m., the crew successfully managed to restart the engine of the 'Rana Frakt' and proceeded under their own power towards Torangsneset.
Ship Collision Legal Dispute Unfolds Over Rana Frakt and Robas Incident
A legal battle has erupted following a maritime collision involving the vessels 'Rana Frakt' and 'Robas' on December 1, 2011. Amid mutual accusations between the ship owners, the Bergen County Court has ruled that Rana Shipping bears primary responsibility for the incident between the two vessels, which took place at 7 p.m. On that fateful night, 'Robas,' laden with 100 tonnes of live salmon, collided with 'Rana Frakt' shortly after the first officer sent the lookout to inspect a valve. At the time of the accident, 'Rana Frakt' and 'Robas' were cruising at speeds of 7.5 and 9 knots, respectively. The impact left 'Rana Frakt' with a significant gash in its bow, yet it managed to continue its journey to Sandnes. Conversely, 'Robas' experienced water ingress in its pump room, which was subsequently sealed by a diver, allowing the vessel to proceed to Skogsvåg for unloading. Following this, 'Robas' underwent a lengthy 46-day repair process in a Bergen yard. The Bergen County Court found Rana Frakt's navigational maneuvers to be the primary cause of the collision, citing insufficient consideration for northbound traffic and the lone master on the bridge failing to adhere to maritime safety regulations. The court has since ordered Rana Frakt to compensate Rostein, the owner of 'Robas,' and its insurance provider over nine million Norwegian crowns. Notably, it was determined that 'Robas' was not at fault for running aground after the water ingress incident, as this action was taken to prevent further sinking. An appeal by Rana Frakt and its insurance company is in motion, with the Court of Appeal in Gulating set to examine the case in June.
