The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has issued a temporary ban on the Indonesian multi-purpose cargo ship, Territory Trader, operated by Meratus Line. This decision follows a series of compliance violations and operational concerns associated with the vessel, which has been a frequent visitor to Australian ports. As of now, the Territory Trader is prohibited from entering or utilizing any ports in Australia for a period of three months. AMSA's Chief Executive Officer, Mick Kinley, revealed that the ship has faced multiple detentions due to ongoing machinery and equipment failures. With 12 visits to Cairns already logged this year, the vessel's poor compliance history has raised significant alarms, as it regularly navigates through the environmentally sensitive regions of the Great Barrier Reef and Torres Strait, which are under strict protection. "This vessel has a poor history of complying with international safety conventions in Australia," stated Mr. Kinley. "Given its high-risk profile, a non-scheduled port state control inspection was warranted." The order, enacted under the Navigation Act 2012, will remain in effect until February 18, 2015, as AMSA continues to prioritize maritime safety and environmental protection in its jurisdiction.
