Major Collision on the Mississippi: Barge Sinks After Tanker Incident
On the evening of April 27, 2025, a serious maritime accident unfolded on the Mississippi River when the tanker 'Isla De Bioko' (IMO: 9767235), loaded with urea and heading from Rotterdam, collided with barges being towed by the tug 'Ginny Rose' at approximately 9:20 p.m. This incident resulted in one barge sinking and led to six others drifting away while navigating downstream from St. Rose, Louisiana, under challenging river conditions. In response to the accident, the U.S. Coast Guard promptly dispatched local tugs to assist in recovery efforts. Their efforts yielded success, with four barges recovered; however, two remained entangled in the anchor chains of nearby vessels, 'Red Fin' and 'Bulker Bee 30' (IMO: 9489986). The 'Red Fin' had been moored at coordinates 29° 56' N 090° 09' W since April 22, while the 'Bulker Bee 30,' having departed New Orleans for Veracruz, had arrived in its destination on May 11 after leaving port on May 9. To ensure safety during recovery operations, the Coast Guard temporarily closed the affected waterway between mile markers 108 to 111 above Head of Passes, allowing crews to evaluate the area surrounding the submerged barge. By April 28 at 3 p.m., it was confirmed that the depth over the sunken barge, located approximately 75 feet beneath the surface, was clear enough for other vessels, leading to the reopening of the channel, albeit with some restrictions. An investigation into the incident is currently underway, with salvage operations for the sunken barge being planned. Elevated river levels continue to pose challenges for marine traffic in the area. Following the incident, the 'Isla De Bioko' resumed its voyage, departing New Orleans again on April 28, and reached Baton Rouge on May 1 before setting course for Rotterdam, with an expected arrival date of May 23.
