Cargo Vessel 'River Trader' Rescued Off Jersey Coast
On December 7, 2021, the cargo ship 'River Trader', which was making its way from Jersey to Emden with a crew of five, issued a distress call at 5:25 PM after it experienced a loss of propulsion due to severe winds. The vessel had anchored off the northern coast of Jersey to seek refuge from the powerful south-westerly gusts when suddenly its engine failed. In response to the Mayday call, the RNLI's all-weather lifeboat was dispatched to Bouley Bay, providing vital reassurance to the distressed ship's crew. By 9 PM the tugboat 'Duke of Normandy' set sail from St. Helier to offer standby support throughout the night. The RNLI lifeboat was subsequently stood down and returned to base. The following morning, December 8, the 'Duke of Normandy' successfully established a towing connection with the 'River Trader' and began the journey back to safety at St. Helier’s Victoria Pier, where the vessel was securely berthed by 4 PM.
