RLO Merchant Heads to Shipyard After Docking Incident in Bremerhaven

Apr 23, 2026 12:09

The oil tanker 'RLO Merchant' departed from the Strom Quay in Bremerhaven at 2:30 a.m. on April 17 and subsequently docked at an oil depot in the inner harbor at 4:45 a.m. Following the docking incident, which resulted in damage to the vessel, plans are in motion to unload the ship before sending it for repairs at a nearby shipyard. Reports indicate damage to the compass deck as well as the searchlight and satellite dish. The vessel's hull also exhibited visible impairment just above the water line on the starboard side. Preliminary investigations by local water police suggest that the vessel’s 50-year-old captain made a navigational error while attempting to berth next to the 'Vilnia Maersk' and did not heed the advice provided by the consulting pilot. As the investigation is still ongoing, the exact cause of the incident has yet to be determined. Importantly, authorities confirmed that the captain was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the mishap. As of April 23, the 'RLO Merchant' remains stationary in harbor. Apr 17, 2026 11:06

On April 15, 2026, the 'RLO Merchant' bunker tanker encountered a mishap in Bremerhaven when it allided with two stationary container vessels at Strom Quay. The ships involved were the 'W. Kampala' (IMO: 9215311) and 'Vilnia Maersk' (IMO: 9778533). The incident occurred around 4:20 p.m. as the tanker attempted to dock alongside the 'Vilnia Maersk' to refuel. However, strong currents thwarted the maneuver, resulting in damage to both the 'Vilnia Maersk' and its docked neighbor, the 'W. Kampala.' Additionally, administrative actions are underway against the vessel's 50-year-old captain. A thorough investigation is still being conducted. Following the incident, the 'W. Kampala' departed Bremerhaven later that same day, heading for Antwerp with an expected time of arrival (ETA) on April 17, while the 'Vilnia Maersk' also set sail, bound for Klaipeda, with an ETA of April 18.
