On February 5, 2019, at approximately 4 p.m., a maritime incident occurred involving the USS Leyte Gulf, a missile cruiser of the US Navy, and the tanker Robert E. Peary. The collision took place during a replenishment operation in the Atlantic Ocean, situated off the southeastern coast of the United States. Both vessels were actively engaged with the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group at the time of the accident. Thankfully, the damages were minimal: the tanker sustained a 20-centimeter gash above the waterline, while USS Leyte Gulf reported only minor damage to its flight deck netting and two lifeboats that were dislodged. Following the incident, both ships proceeded to Norfolk Harbor for a thorough assessment of the damage sustained.
