Bulk Carrier Rescues Yacht Crews After Dramatic Collision
On May 30, 2022, a collaborative Search and Rescue (SAR) operation was initiated by the JRCC Cabo Verde and the National Center after a harrowing incident involving two yachts, 'Julios' and 'Calisto'. Both vessels were en route from Cape Verde to Las Palmas when they collided approximately 245 nautical miles north of Cabo Verde. The 'Calisto', with two crew members onboard, attempted to assist the 'Julios', which carried three crew members but suffered a breakdown during the emergency maneuver. The impact led to the sinking of the 'Julios', prompting its crew to evacuate onto a life raft. Luckily, the bulk carrier 'Chris', which was traveling from Itacoatiara to Las Palmas, was nearby and swiftly responded to the distress situation. The 'Chris' successfully rescued all five crew members from both yachts and continued its journey towards Las Palmas, with an estimated arrival date of June 5.
Vessel 'Chris' Grounds in Paraná River, Navigation Temporarily Halted
On August 7, 2021, the cargo ship 'Chris', traveling from São Francisco do Sul to Recalada, found itself aground at kilometer mark 174 on the Paraná River around 1 p.m. This incident led to a temporary blockade of navigation on the vital waterway. Fortunately, the vessel was successfully refloated early the next day at 3:40 a.m., thanks to the efforts of the tugs 'Virador' and 'Zonda'. Following the guidance of the Argentinian Coast Guard, the 'Chris' made its way to kilometer mark 238, where it dropped anchor to undergo necessary formal procedures and inspections. The Coast Guard subsequently lifted the navigation restriction, allowing up and down river traffic to resume at 4:10 a.m.
Disabled Bulk Carrier 'Christos Theo' Moored at Koper for Repairs
The bulk carrier 'Christos Theo', which encountered grounding issues while navigating the Suez Canal during its journey from Kaoshiung on December 29, 2020, has recently been towed to the roads of Koper on February 10. Upon its arrival, a fleet of four to five tugs assisted in maneuvering the ship to Luka Koper, where it began the discharge of its steel coil cargo on February 12. Once the discharging process is completed, the vessel is set to continue its journey to the ports of Marghera and Ravenna to offload the remaining cargo. However, the ship sustained damage to its rudder during the incident and will require drydocking for necessary repairs. As of February 15, the 'Christos Theo' is currently anchored at Koper in position 45° 34.27' N, 013° 41.07' E, with the tug 'EDT Andromeda' (IMO: 9260328) providing assistance.
