Disabled Cargo Vessel Roseburg Successfully Towed to Rotterdam

Mar 19, 2019 09:26

The cargo ship 'Roseburg,' which departed from Riga on March 5, 2019, and was en route to Shoreham laden with timber, faced critical engine malfunctions that could not be remedied while at sea. On the afternoon of March 10, a towing agreement was established between Landfall Marine Contractors and the vessel's owners to facilitate her safe transportation to Rotterdam. The Dutch AHTS tug 'Isa' (IMO: 9688879), which was undergoing maintenance at a shipyard in Giessendam, was promptly dispatched to assist. As the 'Isa' navigated through inclement weather conditions characterized by northwest winds of 40-45 knots, with gusts reaching up to 50-55 knots, the crew efficiently secured all necessary sea-fastenings while en route to Hoek van Holland. Upon reaching the 'Roseburg’s' location, approximately 45 miles northwest of Hoek van Holland, the 'Isa' stood by as the weather remained excessively harsh. The forecasts suggested a gradual decrease in wind speed, providing a potential opportunity for the towing operation. By mid-afternoon, the crew prepared for their first attempt to connect to the disabled vessel, but the fierce conditions thwarted their efforts. Not to be deterred, they quickly launched a second attempt, which ultimately proved successful. After establishing the tow connection, the 'Roseburg' lifted her anchor, and 30 minutes later, the convoy was on its way to Rotterdam. On March 12 at 06:30 a.m., the 'Roseburg' was securely berthed at the Keppel Verolme Shipyard. Following the completion of necessary repairs, the vessel set sail again on March 23 at 2:30 a.m. and successfully reached Shoreham with her timber cargo by March 24 at 1:30 p.m. For a visual recap of this operation, check out the video footage on LinkedIn: [Watch Here](https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6511084241336430592/).

Kiel Fjord Temporarily Closed as Cargo Ship Roseburg Loses Timber Load

Nov 06, 2013 09:54

During the night of November 6, extensive recovery efforts were underway after the cargo vessel 'Roseburg' lost significant amounts of timber in Kiel Roads the previous evening. Technicians from the Technical Support Work (THW) were able to retrieve many of the 700 bundles of timber, each measuring up to three meters in length, near the Caterpillar Works in Friedrichsort. The 'Roseburg' had anchored off Kiel on November 5 for necessary repairs. A technical malfunction in the ballast water pumps caused the vessel to unexpectedly shift to starboard during its pumping operations. This alarming shift put the ship at risk of capsizing, resulting in an officer falling overboard from the starboard bridge wing. Fortunately, he was rescued within ten minutes and treated for hypothermia at a local hospital, with an expectation to return to the ship later on November 6. To aid in the situation, the anti-pollution vessel 'Scharhörn' and the emergency tug 'Bülk' were dispatched to monitor the four tons of timber drifting in the fjord. Consequently, the Kiel Fjord was temporarily closed to all maritime traffic by the traffic control authorities until the majority of the timber could be recovered. Following the safe mooring of the 'Roseburg' at Scheer Port in Kiel, the water police initiated an investigation focused on the technical systems that impact the vessel’s stability. Assessments of the remaining timber were slated to be conducted by insurance representatives, determining whether the cargo would remain in Kiel or be re-stowed for its onward journey to England.

Cargo Vessel 'Roseburg' Faces Capsizing Scare in Kiel Bight

Nov 05, 2013 23:13

On the evening of November 5, 2013, the cargo vessel 'Roseburg' encountered a serious incident while navigating off Friedrichsort in the Kiel Bight. At approximately 5 p.m., the vessel began to list dramatically in the Holtenau Roads, causing significant alarm. The rapidly tilting ship resulted in its entire deck cargo of timber spilling into the surrounding waters. Thankfully, the crew of the 'Roseburg' acted swiftly and was able to regain some stability. The situation prompted the quick response of the anti-pollution vessel 'Scharhörn' and an emergency tug, which worked tirelessly throughout the night to secure the drifting wood and prevent further environmental impact. After the ordeal, the 'Roseburg', which was traveling from Riga to Barrow-in-Furness, successfully moored at the Scheer Port at the North Jetty by 8:30 p.m. However, the vessel was subsequently detained for further investigation into the incident.
