Pirate Attack on RT Champion: A Maritime Incident from 2011
On March 10, 2011, the vessel RT Champion, identified by IMO number 9489950, became the target of a joint pirate attack alongside the RT Leader, approximately 830 miles off the Somali coastline. Each ship was manned by a crew of six, comprising three Dutch nationals and three Indonesians. Upon realizing the gravity of the situation, the RT Champion and RT Leader promptly communicated their predicament via radio. In response, the Dutch frigate De Ruyter, stationed 400 miles away, rapidly deployed to the scene and arrived on March 11. By the time De Ruyter reached the vessels, the piracy attempt had already been thwarted. Nevertheless, the frigate provided a safe escort for the tugs as they proceeded towards the Port of Suez. Both vessels have since successfully navigated back into the Red Sea, marking a critical moment in maritime security efforts.
