Bulk Carrier 'Occitan Sky' Aids in Dramatic Rescue of 24 Migrants Off Gran Canaria
On the morning of October 7, 2021, the bulk carrier 'Occitan Sky', while traveling from Fortaleza to Las Palmas, spotted a distressed migrant boat approximately 155.5 kilometers south of Gran Canaria. Promptly, the vessel notified Salvamento MarĂtimo, the maritime rescue organization. In response, a SAR helicopter, Helimer, was deployed to the scene, successfully evacuating three migrants—who were of Maghreb origin—to the Hospital de Gran Canaria Doctor NegrĂn that same morning. Following the alert from the 'Occitan Sky', the Maritime Rescue coordinating center based in Santa Cruz de Tenerife dispatched the 'Guardamar ConcepciĂłn Arenal' to assist. This rescue operation culminated around 10:30 p.m. when the 'Guardamar ConcepciĂłn Arenal' managed to bring all 24 individuals, including two women, safely on board. Due to the concerning health conditions of three migrants, they were subsequently hoisted to the helicopter at 00:30 a.m., ensuring their urgent transportation to the heliport at the Hospital de Gran Canaria. The remaining 21 migrants were later taken back to the ArguineguĂn dock, where they disembarked in Gran Canaria on October 8 at approximately 04:30 a.m. This operation highlights the critical role of maritime vessels and rescue services in responding to humanitarian crises at sea.
