On June 11, 2025, maritime operations were marred by the sinking of the bulk carrier 'Run Fu 3', which was traveling from Tianjin to Lome. The vessel succumbed to severe flooding in its cargo hold, leading to water ingress in the foreship. This critical situation forced all 23 crew members to abandon ship approximately 500 nautical miles south of the Maldives at coordinates 09°04.48 S, 073°34.06 E. The incident unfolded when a distress signal was transmitted at around 2:45 a.m. local time. The South Korean-flagged bulk carrier 'Maple Harbour' (IMO: 9593323), which was on its way from Son Duong to Italy, swiftly altered its course to respond to the emergency. The rescue vessel arrived at the location by 5:30 a.m. and promptly initiated rescue operations. Despite their diligent efforts, the crew of 'Run Fu 3' could not manage the flooding, leading them to evacuate into life rafts at 8:15 a.m. Hours later, at approximately 1:20 p.m., the crew was successfully transferred to the 'Maple Harbour'. Among the rescued were 21 Vietnamese nationals and two from Myanmar, who were offered food, water, and accommodations on the Korean vessel. Facilitating a secure return, measures are currently in place to disembark the crew safely at Port Louis, with an estimated time of arrival set for June 16.
