Working Conditions Aboard the Rv-Sally-Ride

The highly anticipated commissioning of the R/V Sally Ride will take place this Friday along the picturesque waterfront of downtown San Diego. This 238-foot scientific research vessel, which belongs to the Navy and is operated by the esteemed Scripps Institution of Oceanography, is a significant addition to marine research capabilities. This weekend, the public will have a chance to explore the vessel through free tours at Broadway Pier. On Saturday, UC San Diego students, faculty, and staff will get their exclusive opportunity to board, while the general public is invited on Sunday, with tours available from noon to 4 p.m. The R/V Sally Ride, named in honor of the trailblazing first American woman in space, is gearing up for its inaugural research mission set for next month. It will partake in a comprehensive study of the California Current, continuing an important 60-year investigation into the relationships between marine life and environmental factors, as well as the effects of human activities on ocean dynamics. The vessel was constructed in Anacortes, Washington, and was delivered to Scripps last month. Please note that the commissioning ceremony itself will not be open to the public.
