U.S. Coast Guard Launches Inquiry into Sabre Spirit Grounding Incident
The U.S. Coast Guard has commenced an investigation into the grounding of the Sabre Spirit, a Panamanian flag roll-on/roll-off cargo vessel measuring 190 feet. This incident occurred on Friday morning near Current Cut, situated between the islands of Saint Thomas and Great Saint James in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Fortunately, the ship was able to be refloated with the help of the rising tide shortly after it ran aground. Coast Guard officials reported that there are currently no signs of oil pollution emanating from the Sabre Spirit, and the vessel does not pose any immediate environmental threat. At the time of the grounding, the ship was en route from Tortola, British Virgin Islands, to Charlotte Amalie, Saint Thomas, with a crew of 12 aboard; thankfully, no injuries were recorded. Coast Guard marine casualty investigators are diligently looking into the circumstances leading to the grounding, while also assessing potential future enforcement actions regarding the Sabre Spirit. "The cause of the grounding is under investigation," stated Capt. Drew W. Pearson, the commander of Coast Guard Sector San Juan. He further highlighted the effective teamwork among agencies involved, saying, "The close interagency coordination and response from Sea Tow and the Coast Guard averted an environmental tragedy in U.S. Virgin Island waters." The Coast Guard Sector San Juan was first alerted to the situation by the Sabre Spirit shortly after 10 a.m. on Friday, when the vessel reported its grounding. It later informed authorities that it had successfully refloated but was experiencing water intake issues.
