Tanker Collision on Mississippi River Near Gretna: Incident Summary
On the night of August 12, 2014, a serious maritime incident occurred as the downbound vessel 'Flag Gangos', IMO 9460576, lost both power and steering while navigating the Mississippi River. At approximately 11 p.m., the vessel struck the tanker's hull 'Pamisos' and the barge 'Web 235' that were securely docked at river mile 97.4 in the vicinity of Gretna, Louisiana. During this time, the barge was undergoing fuel oil transfer operations. This unfortunate collision resulted in damage to both the 'Pamisos' and the 'Web 235', and led to a small discharge of fuel into the river from the transfer hose, which was promptly shut off following the incident. Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene, deploying containment booms to mitigate environmental impact. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among the crews involved. In response to the situation, the Coast Guard Captain of the Port based in New Orleans established a one-way traffic system along the river near the International Matex Tank Terminals. Assistance was provided by the U.S. Coast Guard, Gretna police, Jefferson Parish Emergency Management, and the Harvey Fire Department. As of 12:30 a.m. on August 13, the 'Flag Gangos', which had sustained significant damage to its bow, was anchored in the river. Traffic was closed from mile marker 96 to mile marker 98 as tugs were dispatched to secure the affected vessels. Meanwhile, local authorities inspected the city's water supply system and confirmed its safety amidst the incident.
