Controversy Erupts Over R18-Million Damage from Dry Dock Incident Involving Go Regulus
The 'Go Regulus' has become the focal point of a dispute regarding R18-million in damages incurred during a mishap at a dry dock in Cape Town. In December, the vessel suffered significant bow and stern damage after a caisson gate in the Sturrock dry dock unexpectedly opened while water was being added, leading to a flood that caused the 'Go Regulus' to collide with adjacent ships. This incident followed a prior accident just two weeks earlier, where the ship's hull was compromised due to a mix-up with docking blocks, resulting in numerous hull indentations. After the December incident, the vessel was left stranded in the nearby Robinson dry dock for several weeks as the Transnet National Port Authority (TNPA) and ship repairers engaged in a dispute over who would cover the repair costs. Although the 'Go Regulus' has since been relocated, TNPA has denied any responsibility for the incident. The vessel's crew was notified of the need to vacate the dry dock, although the owners have sought an additional 14 days to address the situation. Preliminary reports suggest that the dry dock gate lacked adequate ballast water, causing it to malfunction. EBH SA is currently in negotiations with TNPA to seek a resolution to this contentious issue.
Incident at EBH Ship Repair Yard: 'Go Regulus' Suffers Damage in Dry Dock
On December 3, 2016, the offshore supply vessel 'Go Regulus' sustained hull damage during a mishap at the Sturrock Dry Dock in Cape Town, where dock personnel at EBH incorrectly positioned the ship on unsuitable support blocks. As the dry dock's water was evacuated, the vessel settled improperly, leading to limited damage to its hull. Following the incident, EBH SA promptly coordinated with Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) to expedite a resolution. Compounding the issue, on December 7, a secondary caisson designed to divide the dock chambers began to collapse, unexpectedly inundating the area with water. This resulted in the 'Go Regulus' nearly rolling over, as it collided with both an adjacent vessel and the dock's infrastructure. Fortunately, the factory trawler 'Longda' managed to slip away from the ensuing chaos. The total cost of repairs for the vessels and the dry dock is yet to be assessed, though all three affected vessels have since been relocated from the dry dock. Further evaluations of the 'Go Regulus' will be necessary to ascertain the full extent of the damage incurred.
