Tragedy Strikes Port of Antwerp as Three Dockworkers Lose Lives While Unloading Coal
A tragic incident unfolded last Saturday at the Port of Antwerp, resulting in the deaths of three seasoned dockworkers during coal unloading operations from the Hong Kong-flagged MV Saga Frontier. Reports indicate that the workers suffocated after entering the open cargo hold to carry out cleaning tasks. While the dockworkers were known for their expertise, local authorities have begun investigations into potential negligence by the ship’s Captain and crew, who may not have alerted the dockworkers about the presence of hazardous gases in the hold. Paddy Crumlin, President of the International Transport Workers’ Federation, expressed grave concerns, stating, 'We must remain vigilant regarding port safety and accident prevention. Antwerp is a port that prioritizes health and safety, and together with the unions of the deceased, we trust that a thorough investigation will uncover the facts and help implement necessary safety measures moving forward.'
