Successful Medevac Operation off Colaba Saves Filipino Citizen

Jul 16, 2023 13:57

On July 15, 2023, a critical Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) took place involving a Filipino national aboard the 'Saipem Endeavour', who was suffering from acute appendicitis. The request originated from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai, prompting immediate action to ensure the patient's safety. At the time of the incident, the vessel, which was being towed, was situated approximately 55 nautical miles southwest of INS Shikra, the helibase of the Western Naval Command in Colaba. A collaborative effort between the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard was swiftly initiated, deploying a Sea King helicopter from INS Shikra alongside the Coast Guard ship 'Samrat'. The Sea King helicopter took off at 9 a.m., facing challenging weather conditions characterized by low visibility and a deep cloud cover. Despite turbulent waters and the vessel rolling significantly, the helicopter effectively navigated the difficulties, successfully landing on the 'Saipem Endeavour' to retrieve the patient. The operation concluded with the helicopter returning to INS Shikra by around 10 a.m. Upon arrival, the patient received prompt initial medical care before being transferred to naval hospital Asvini for comprehensive treatment. This operation highlights the efficiency and dedication of the Indian Navy and Coast Guard in responding to medical emergencies at sea.
