Investigation Points to Master Error in Port Klang Maritime Incident

Nov 02, 2014 16:36

An accident off the coast of Port Klang has raised serious concerns regarding the actions of the master of the "San Felipe." A container fire on the foreship of the vessel is reportedly still smoldering, fueled by combustible and potentially explosive materials within the cargo. The flames spread to the "Al Riffa," but fortunately, they were brought under control quickly once the containers were emptied. As of 0630 UTC on November 2, the "San Felipe" remained in its position off Port Klang, accompanied by tugs "Smit Lynx" and "KST Success." The "Al Riffa," which suffered visible hull and cargo damage on its port side, departed the terminal on November 1 and is currently anchored three miles south of the "San Felipe" within the Port Klang roads. Reports suggest that the captain of the "San Felipe," a Russian national, may bear responsibility for this maritime mishap. While a pilot was present onboard, the master opted to assume command, ultimately miscalculating the wind and tidal currents. These errors are believed to have led to the allision, prompting investigations to delve into the incident further.
