Search Operation Ceased for Missing Crew Member from Santa Clara

Feb 09, 2021 13:13

On February 8, the maritime police officially suspended the search for a 24-year-old female crew member who went missing from the container vessel 'Santa Clara' near Bremerhaven. Authorities determined that survival was unlikely due to the frigid water temperatures. Initial investigations suggested she accidentally fell overboard while performing her duties at the gangway. The 'Santa Clara' departed from Bremerhaven at 9:40 a.m. on the same day, en route to Rotterdam.

Tragedy at Sea: Crew Member Overboard in Weser Estuary Incident

Feb 07, 2021 13:49

On February 7, 2021, a distress call was made to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) of the German Society for Rescue at Sea (DGzRS) following a serious situation involving a female crew member from the cargo vessel 'Santa Clara.' The incident occurred at approximately 3:44 a.m. as the ship navigated the Weser estuary, specifically near buoy 39 close to Fedderwardersiel while en route from Coryton to Bremerhaven. In response, a swift and coordinated rescue operation was launched, involving the lifeboat 'Hermann Rudolf Meyer' from the Bremerhaven station and 'Emil Zimmermann' from the volunteer station at Fedderwardersiel, alongside two pilot boats and the police vessel 'Wisura.' The initial response included a helicopter from Northern Helicopter, supplemented by a Sea-King helicopter deployed by the German Navy. However, the search efforts were significantly challenged by the extreme low water levels in the area. Despite these challenges, the 'Santa Clara' safely docked at the NTB NordseeTerminal in Bremerhaven at 5 a.m. As the search continued into the late morning, it was ultimately called off due to the absence of new leads. The weather conditions at the time were severe, characterized by wind gusts reaching up to 10 Beaufort, with air temperatures plummeting to -8 degrees Celsius and water temperatures lingering around two degrees. The local authorities from Bremerhaven are currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
