On November 30, 2018, a crew member aboard the fishing vessel 'Santa Cristina' experienced a severe medical emergency while approximately 200 nautical miles offshore from St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. The situation prompted a swift response from the Royal Canadian Air Force's Search and Rescue (SAR) technicians. The rescue operation commenced after the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Halifax received an initial distress call from a rescue center in Lisbon the previous evening, November 29. Despite treacherous conditions with swells reaching four to five metres, the JRCC in Boston directed the vessel toward St. John's, the closest port for medical assistance. As the crew member's condition deteriorated, a Cormorant helicopter from 103 Squadron in St. John's and a Hercules aircraft from CFB Greenwood in Nova Scotia were deployed to execute the medevac.
