Fire Incident at Port of Motril Promptly Handled by SAR Mastelero and Tug Claudia
On June 5, 2023, a fire erupted in the Port of Motril shortly after 6:30 p.m., originating from a pile of scrap material on dock three. The alarm was quickly raised, activating an extensive emergency response that included the Motril Fire Department, the Provincial Consortium, Civil Guard, National Police, Local Police, Port Authority, and the Health Emergency Center (CES) 061. Although the fire was successfully contained, it continued to emit a significant column of black smoke, raising initial concerns. By 9:30 p.m., the SAR Mastelero and the tugboat Claudia were deployed to aid in extinguishing the blaze as part of the operations coordinated by the Port of Motril. Thankfully, there was no immediate danger to personnel or infrastructure, as the situation remained under control. For further details and images, visit the report at El Faro Motril.
Successful Tug Operation Refloats Luxury Yacht 'Neeveen' in Carchuna
On February 18, 2022, the tugboat 'SAR Mastelero' successfully accomplished the challenging task of refloating the luxury yacht 'Neeveen,' which had run aground on the shores of Carchuna. The operation involved a dedicated team comprising 18 shore workers and 10 crew members on the salvage vessel, alongside four additional crew from the SAR ship 'Salvamar Gineah.' To aid in the refloating process, pressurized balloons were strategically placed within the yacht and around its hull to enhance buoyancy. Prior to this, a substantial amount of diesel—6,500 liters—was meticulously drained from the yacht's tanks, while solid contaminants were cleared away on February 14 and 15. The salvage efforts encountered a temporary setback due to a mechanical failure on the salvage vessel; however, the prompt mobilization of the 'Luz de Mar' from Algeciras was put on standby by Salvamento MarĂtimo, though the crew of the 'SAR Mastelero' managed to undertake engine repairs. After switching the towing chain from the stern to the bow, the crew succeeded in maneuvering the yacht towards deeper waters, allowing it to gain the necessary buoyancy. The journey back to the port of Motril is expected to take a few hours. Once docked, operators will employ a travelift to transfer the yacht to dry dock, where a thorough damage assessment will be conducted to determine the next steps. Tugboat on Standby to Rescue Stranded Luxury Yacht Off Carchuna Beach
The tugboat 'SAR Mastelero' is preparing to aid in the rescue of the grounded luxury yacht 'Neeveen', currently stranded on Carchuna beach. Since February 11, the Maritime Captaincy, under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility, and Urban Agenda, in coordination with Salvamento MarĂtimo, has been on-site to mitigate environmental risks related to the abandoned vessel.Operations began with a mission to extract fuel from the yacht to prevent potential leaks and to facilitate its eventual relocation to the port of Motril. On February 15, 2022, divers and environmental experts attempted to continue their decontamination efforts, which involved the removal of hazardous materials such as paints, solvents, and batteries. Unfortunately, their efforts were hampered by the onset of the Poniente storm, causing a delay in the yacht’s transfer, which may extend over several days. Emergency responders, including the Civil Guard, National Police, Maritime Service, Maritime Rescue, Red Cross, and the Motril Fire Department, worked tirelessly for five hours to safely evacuate three individuals aboard the yacht, along with their two large dogs, using a ladder for safe exit. The vessel’s owner, an elderly French gentleman, had run the yacht aground during transit from Puerto BanĂşs to AlmerĂa but has since disowned the vessel. Consequently, he has forfeited all rights to the yacht, which is now set to either be auctioned or scrapped upon its arrival at the Granada dock, contingent on its condition. The 'Neeveen', a luxury yacht measuring 22 meters in length and weighing 67 tons, carries an estimated value of around 450,000 Euros. Scrapping such a vessel can command more than 10,000 Euros.
