Severe Weather Halts Towage of New Mine Countermeasures Vessel 'Scheveningen'
The tug 'Sea Lord', tasked with towing the hull of the newly constructed mine countermeasures vessel 'Scheveningen', has faced significant delays in the Mediterranean Sea, north of Morocco. After departing Romania over a month ago, the vessels were en route to France for the final touches on the newbuilding when they encountered severe weather conditions. A violent storm, primarily affecting Ireland, has generated wind gusts reaching up to 183 kilometers per hour and wave heights exceeding 11 meters (sea state 8) in the Atlantic Ocean. On January 24, 2025, rough seas led to recorded wave heights of 4 to 5 meters (sea state 6) along the path from the Strait of Gibraltar towards Concarneau. As a precaution, 'Sea Lord' took refuge in the alboran Sea, located in the western Mediterranean, adjacent to Ceuta and near the Strait of Gibraltar. Subsequently, the vessel docked in Malaga on January 25. Forecasters are predicting another storm on January 26, which is expected to also impact Ireland and the United Kingdom, with wave heights projected to surpass 10 meters (sea state 8) in the Bay of Biscay by January 27, particularly over Brittany's southwestern coast and even greater heights southwest of Ireland in the Atlantic. Adding to the tumultuous weather, a third front is anticipated on January 29, with peak wave heights exceeding 10 meters along the Portuguese coast, directly on the route to Brittany. However, conditions are expected to improve, with calmer seas predicted by January 31.
