On March 8, 2022, the tanker 'Schumi 7' was escorted to Phuket by the Royal Thai Navy following urgent pleas for assistance from five of its crew members, including one individual who had not set foot on land for an astonishing 13 months. Noppadol Boonmee, one of the crew members, reached out for help on March 7 at 5:30 p.m., reporting their dire situation and requesting to return ashore. Originally contracted for a nine-month period, the crew had spent over a year without coming into port since the last visit to Phuket. Verification of their claims was promptly conducted by Phuket port officials. At the time of the distress call, the vessel was situated several nautical miles off Thap Lamu, making its way toward Bangladesh. The HTMS 'Laem Sing' and the patrol boat 'Tor 229,' equipped with labor officials, intercepted the tanker, which was under the command of Captain Suthichai Duangdara, at approximately 8 p.m. After ensuring a safe escort back to Ao Makham, all 18 crew members underwent Covid-19 testing before their disembarkation, with results confirming that everyone tested negative. Investigations into the crew's employment contracts and working conditions are currently underway, as officials assess the situation for any possible legal ramifications.
