SEACOR Marine's Maya Set to be Gulf of Mexico's First Hybrid-Powered Offshore Vessel

In a groundbreaking move for the maritime industry, ABS has partnered with SEACOR Marine to classify the Gulf of Mexico's first offshore support vessel (OSV) equipped with hybrid power capability. The OSV in question, the Maya, is being operated by Mantenimiento Express Maritimo SAPI de CV (MEXMAR), which is a joint venture involving SEACOR Marine. To enhance its environmental and economic performance, the Maya is undergoing significant upgrades to incorporate lithium battery technology, with these modifications slated for completion by May 2018. Dr. Wei Huang, the ABS Director for Offshore Support Vessels, emphasized that "ABS recognizes the economic and environmental benefits of hybrid-powered vessels to reduce both fuel consumption and emissions across marine and offshore sectors." This initiative not only aligns with their safety mission but also bolsters the development of alternative power solutions and energy storage systems aimed at optimizing operational efficiencies. Tim Clerc, SEACOR's Manager of Engineering, shared insights on the anticipated impact of the hybrid power solution, stating, "The SEACOR Maya has the potential to cut fuel consumption by as much as 20 percent. Integrating advanced technologies is a complex task, and our collaboration with ABS ensures that the reliability of the lithium battery system is validated. The operational savings from using hybrid power will also contribute to lowering emissions and meeting stringent environmental regulations." Following this pioneering step, SEACOR has also engaged ABS to provide the BATTERY-Li notation for three additional OSVs operated by MEXMAR. These vessels, including SEACOR Azteca, SEACOR Warrior, and SEACOR Viking, are scheduled for similar hybrid power upgrades, with expected completion in July 2018. This series of advancements marks a significant leap towards sustainable practices in offshore operations.
