Sailing Restrictions Ignored Near LNG Tanker in Rügen Waters

May 16, 2023 11:12

The Sassnitz Water Police Inspectorate has reported a concerning trend of noncompliance with established sailing bans around LNG tankers in the Nordperd roadstead, located near Rügen. Over the weekend of May 13 and 14, 2023, authorities were compelled to remove several sailing vessels that ventured close to the "Seapeak Hispania." This area has been designated by the Baltic Sea Waterways and Shipping Office for the handling of hazardous materials, which includes the regular presence of LNG shuttle tankers. It is crucial for other vessels not engaged in cargo operations to maintain a safe distance from these ships, mandated by the Baltic Sea Shipping Authority's regulations, which stipulate a minimum distance of one nautical mile. Additionally, this traffic restriction is routinely communicated via VHF radio announcements by the traffic control center, and vessel operators with radiotelephones are required to have them on and tuned in. Violation of this one-mile distance constitutes an administrative offence. The Sassnitz water protection police conduct regular patrols of the Nordperd roadstead to uphold the safety of maritime traffic in the area.

Major Cocaine Haul Discovered Aboard 'Hispania Spirit' at Point Fortin Port

Apr 04, 2019 09:44

In a significant drug bust, Customs and Coast Guard officials uncovered nearly $120 million worth of cocaine concealed beneath the 'Hispania Spirit' at the Atlantic Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) port in Point Fortin on the morning of April 3, 2019. This isn't the first time the tanker has been linked to illegal drugs; previously, on September 8, 2015, authorities seized 211 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a compartment during an inspection in Pisco, Peru. At that time, a Venezuelan national, not affiliated with the crew, was arrested in connection with the incident. In the recent operation, the seven bales of cocaine, totaling approximately 200 kilograms, were discovered affixed to the vessel's rudder. The captain, while conducting routine safety checks prior to the ship's departure, noticed suspicious packages in the rudder area and promptly informed an agent. This led to a swift response from law enforcement, who apprehended the cargo and initiated an investigation to determine whether the drugs were loaded while the ship was docked or if it had inadvertently sailed into Trinidad and Tobago waters with the narcotics onboard.
