On December 17, 2016, at approximately 4 p.m., a maritime accident occurred in the Tan Phuoc Commune, Tan Thanh District, when the container ship 'MOL Brilliance' collided with the coastal barge 'Cai Mep 28' (Reg.-No.: SG-7559), operated by the Jiangnan company. The 'MOL Brilliance', staffed by a crew of 24, was departing from Phu My in Vung Tau, with a pilot from Pilotage Ltd. Co. on board. During its maneuvering process on the Cai Mep-Thi Vai river, the ship unexpectedly lost control and veered towards the barge, resulting in a strike to the starboard side with its bulbous bow. The impact punctured the barge, causing it to list to port as it was carrying 120 TEUs. By 10 p.m., both vessels remained entangled but were later moved approximately one kilometer from the initial collision site. The containers from 'Cai Mep 28' were subsequently removed and transported to the warehouses of the Cai Border Station for safekeeping. Meanwhile, the 'MOL Brilliance' was maneuvered towards the Go Gia anchorage on the Cai Mep river and secured to temporary buoys for the duration of the investigation.
