Seaspan Empire Collides with Two Ferries in Santos: No Injuries Reported

Feb 19, 2026 09:31

On February 16, 2026, at approximately 9:30 p.m., a notable maritime incident occurred in the port of Santos when the container ship 'Seaspan Empire' struck two ferries, namely 'FB 14' (MMSI: 710002810) and 'FB 15' (MMSI: 710001030). These ferries are integral in transporting vehicles between Santos and Guarujá and were reportedly navigating in tandem at the time of the collision. The accident unfolded as the 'Seaspan Empire', which had intended to dock at Embraport, was forced to return to the port entrance due to limited pier space. The mishap happened near Arm35, where 'FB 15', alongside 'FB 14', which was undergoing maintenance, unexpectedly crossed the path of the large vessel. Fortunately, the crew of 'FB 14' acted swiftly, jumping into the water before the imminent impact. They were quickly rescued by the São Paulo Pilotage Service boats or managed to swim to safety on the nearby shore. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries, eliminating the need for a formal rescue operation by emergency services such as the Fire Department. Damage was primarily sustained on the bow of one of the ferries, prompting both vessels to be taken out of service and remain docked on the Santos side of the port. Their operational status is now pending a formal assessment by the Capitania dos Portos (Port Authority), which oversees maritime safety regulations. In response, the Captaincy of the Ports of São Paulo has initiated an investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the collision and its contributing factors. This examination is critical in determining any requisite regulatory measures, including potential reparations or certification requirements for the ferries prior to their return to service. Despite the incident, the ferry operations between Santos and Guarujá were unaffected, as the remaining vessels in the fleet continued to operate. Following the collision, 'Seaspan Empire' made its way to an anchorage area before proceeding to the DP World terminal in the early hours of February 17. The Santos Port Authority later confirmed that the incident did not impact general port navigation. Meanwhile, the Brazilian Navy has also launched its investigation to identify the causes and assign accountability for the collision. Abandoned Yacht in the Mid-Atlantic Rescued by Container Ship Crew

Jan 18, 2019 11:19

A drifting, unoccupied sailing yacht was located in the mid-Atlantic thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Jersey and French Coastguards, along with the vigilant captain of the MOL Empire. The incident unfolded as the vessel, a 20-meter yacht, was spotted by the captain of the container ship while en route from Savannah, Georgia, to Le Havre, France, after departing on January 7, 2019, with an ETA of January 19. The yacht was approximately 1,500 miles away from Jersey, leading to the coordination of rescue operations through the British National Maritime Operations Centre, which specializes in maritime rescues at such distances. Despite rough sea conditions, the MOL Empire's captain made several attempts to launch a rescue craft to approach the abandoned vessel. Unable to do so, he took photographs of the yacht and sent them via satellite to the Jersey Coastguard, CROSS Jobourg, and the UK Coastguard. CROSS Jobourg promptly identified the yacht as the 'Sponsors Wanted,' a competitor of the Route de Rhum race that took place earlier in November 2018. The vessel's skipper, Claire Pruvot, had faced severe storm conditions during the race from St Malo to Guadeloupe, resulting in her rescue after a collision and subsequent abandonment of her boat. Thanks to the captain’s resourcefulness, advancements in offshore telecommunications, and effective inter-agency collaboration among four Coastguard organizations, the incident was resolved in less than 90 minutes without the need for any search and rescue units being deployed. Collision of Container Ships Rocks Port Klang, Malaysia

Aug 02, 2015 15:16

In a dramatic maritime incident, two container vessels, the MOL Empire and the Northern Democrat, collided in Westport harbor at Port Klang, Malaysia, while navigating for berthing at the quay. The unfortunate collision resulted in several containers tumbling into the water and left one shore crane damaged. Preliminary investigations suggest that excessive speed coupled with strong winds caused the MOL Empire to drift into the already berthed Northern Democrat, which was in the midst of cargo handling operations. Fortunately, both ships sustained only minor damages and remained stable and seaworthy. Remarkably, there were no injuries reported among the crew or dockworkers involved. Following the incident, both vessels have been detained for thorough inspections pending further investigations. The MOL Empire, identified by IMO number 9407160, boasts an overall length of 294.00 meters, a molded beam of 32.00 meters, and a maximum draft of 11.00 meters. With a deadweight of 67,000 DWT and a gross tonnage of 54,940 GRT, the ship was constructed in 2010 at Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, South Korea. On the other hand, the Northern Democrat, registered under IMO number 9391787, measures 230.00 meters in overall length, has a molded beam of 32.00 meters, and a maximum draft of 10.50 meters. The vessel, owned by Norddeutsche Reederei, was built in 2009 by Shanghai Shipyard and has a deadweight of 41,986 DWT and a gross tonnage of 36,007 GRT. This incident raises significant concerns regarding navigational safety within one of Malaysia's busiest ports.
