Container Ship Collision in Busan Harbor: Milano Bridge Incident
On April 6, 2020, at approximately 2 p.m. local time, the container ship 'Milano Bridge', piloted through Busan's North Terminal International Terminal, encountered a serious mishap. While maneuvering towards berth 8 from Shanghai, the vessel made contact with container cranes 81, 84, and 85 during its cargo operations at berth 7. In a dramatic turn of events, the operator of crane 85, a 44-year-old man, bravely leaped approximately 5 meters to escape impending danger, sustaining only minor ankle injuries that required hospital treatment. The collision resulted in the collapse of crane 85, while cranes 81 and 84 were pushed off their rails, immobilizing them. Crane 81 was also deemed at risk of collapsing. Notably, prior to this incident, the 'Milano Bridge' had also made contact with another vessel, the 'Seaspan Ganges', at the same berth. Recovery efforts will be extensive; estimates suggest that replacing crane 85 could take around 18 months, and returning crane 84 to working condition might require 3 to 5 months, assuming the structural integrity remains intact. Fortunately, cranes 82 and 83 appeared to have escaped significant damage. The Busan Coast Guard is currently conducting an investigation into the causes surrounding this unfortunate accident.
