Hanjin Vessels Continue Cargo Operations: Hanjin Jungil Arrives in Long Beach
In a significant development for the shipping industry, reports from Korea’s Yonhap News Agency indicate that 35 out of 97 containerships operated by the insolvent South Korean shipping company Hanjin have now completed offloading their cargo. Notably, the Hanjin Jungil is expected to dock at Total Terminals International in Long Beach later today, where it will unload its containers before heading to Oakland. Meanwhile, the Hanjin Miami has been busy unloading at Maher Terminal in Elizabeth, New Jersey, after circling off the U.S. East Coast for several weeks. According to a representative from the Port of New York and New Jersey, the Hanjin Miami is expected to finish its operations by midday Friday. In addition to these activities, the Hanjin Marine is set to arrive in Seattle today, and the Hanjin Croatia is anticipated to reach Manzanillo, Mexico, this afternoon, as outlined in Hanjin's customer advisory.
Hanjin Shipping Claims U.S.-Bound Vessel Held 'Hostage' Amid Bankruptcy Woes
(Reuters) The legal representative for Hanjin Shipping Co Ltd (117930.KS), the South Korean container shipping giant that has recently entered bankruptcy, expressed urgent concerns on Thursday regarding a vessel bound for the United States that is being effectively 'held hostage' due to payment disputes. This predicament is exacerbating the already critical situation involving $14 billion worth of cargo stranded on over 100 of Hanjin's ships across the globe. At a court hearing, Hanjin's attorney, Ilana Volkov, highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the company's future when U.S. Bankruptcy Judge John Sherwood inquired about the possibility of Hanjin undergoing liquidation. Having filed for bankruptcy last month, Hanjin is currently the seventh-largest container shipping line worldwide, raising alarms as the busy holiday shipping season approaches. In a noteworthy development, a judge in Korea recently sanctioned $10 million to assist in paying tug operators, ports, and cargo handlers for the unloading of four U.S.-bound vessels. Since then, ships including the Hanjin Boston, Hanjin Greece, and Hanjin Gdynia have begun to discharge their cargo. However, the situation for the Hanjin Jungil remains precarious, as it continues to float off the California coast, as reported by the Marine Exchange of Southern California. During the hearing in Newark, New Jersey, Volkov revealed that negotiations with service suppliers have been fraught with challenges, stating, 'I'm not going to let this ship berth.' She characterized the situation as her client being held hostage. Moreover, she informed the court that a Korean court has delayed consideration of Hanjin's plea for an additional $50 million fund that would facilitate the unloading of at least four more Hanjin vessels carrying cargo intended for the U.S. As of Wednesday, South Korea's finance ministry reported that 36 of Hanjin’s 97 container vessels are currently waiting outside international ports, while 37 others remain undischarged with intentions to return to Korea. In the meantime, 24 vessels have successfully unloaded in Korea and other locations.

In a significant milestone for the maritime industry, Seaspan has successfully delivered the second vessel in a series of 17 advanced container ships, the HANJIN JUNGIL. Notably designed to operate efficiently within a speed range of 18 to 22 knots, these container ships feature hull lines that have been meticulously optimized for enhanced performance.
