Working Conditions Aboard the Seaways-Sabine

On July 16, 2024, during their routine activities in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, the USS 'Bulkeley' (DDG 84) and the Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM 79) played a crucial role in a dramatic rescue operation. A helicopter from HSM 79, while conducting flight maneuvers, spotted a vessel in distress, adrift and signaling for help. Upon relaying this information back to the USS 'Bulkeley', the destroyer coordinated efforts with the Joint Rescue Coordination Center to enlist the aid of the mariner vessel 'Seaways Sabine'. Upon reaching the distressed vessel, the 'Seaways Sabine' discovered 31 individuals onboard, many of whom had been stranded for days. Among them, three individuals were in urgent need of medical care. Responding promptly, 'Bulkeley’ dispatched its RHIB to transfer Corpsmen to the 'Seaways Sabine' to administer aid. Despite their valiant efforts, one person could not be revived despite intensive CPR efforts. Thankfully, the other two patients were stabilized and subsequently transported to Port Sidi Kurayr for further medical treatment. The collaboration between naval forces and merchant marine vessels exemplifies the vital importance of maritime safety and cooperation in emergency situations.
