Sedov Sets Sail: World’s Largest Tall Ship Embarks on Baltic Training Expedition
The majestic Sedov, known as the largest sailing ship in the world, departed from Svetly port in Kaliningrad Region on an exciting training voyage across the Baltic Sea. This voyage marks Sedov's transition to its new home port in Kaliningrad, following its relocation from Murmansk in late May. Initially set to depart on Saturday night, the ship’s journey was delayed due to fog but finally commenced on Sunday morning, as confirmed by Irina Obrazova, spokeswoman for the Baltic State Academy of the Fishing Fleet, which is under the management of Kaliningrad State Technical University. Onboard, 114 aspiring mariners from maritime schools in Murmansk, Kerch, and Kaliningrad are gaining invaluable hands-on experience. The towering vessel is on its way to Den Helder in the Netherlands, retracing the route taken by the barque Kruzenshtern, which embarked on its training journey on June 14. Both Sedov and Kruzenshtern are gearing up to participate in The Tall Ships Race 2017 (STI), which includes stops at several picturesque ports including Halmstad in Sweden, Kotka and Turku in Finland, as well as Klaipeda in Lithuania and Szczecin in Poland. Additionally, in August, these Russian ships are set to arrive at the German port of Rostock. The grand voyages are expected to conclude with their return to Kaliningrad on August 18.
Sedov, the World’s Largest Sailing Ship, Relocates Home Port to Kaliningrad
MURMANSK, April 10. /TASS/. The Sedov, renowned as the largest sailing ship globally, has officially relocated its home port from Murmansk, located in northwestern Russia, to Kaliningrad, the westernmost port city in Russia. This significant change was confirmed by a representative of the Murmansk State Technical University, which previously managed the iconic vessel, in a statement to TASS on Monday. The spokesman explained, "The ship is owned by the Russian Federation and has been managed by the Murmansk State Technical University. To reduce state budget expenditures related to the maintenance of training ships, it was decided to transfer operational management of Sedov to the Kaliningrad State Technical University, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Federal Fisheries Agency." This strategic move aims to enhance the operational efficiency of the vessel while continuing its legacy as a training ship. More information can be found at: http://tass.com/world/940520
Historic Sailing Ship Sedov Collides with German Cog Replica in Texel Waters
On June 20, 2013, an unexpected maritime incident occurred involving the tall ship 'Sedov' and the German replica cog 'Lisa von LĂĽbeck' in the Texel roads. During the afternoon, the 'Sedov' was performing navigational maneuvers and could not avert a collision with the anchored 'Lisa von LĂĽbeck,' which is renowned as a wooden replica of a 15th-century cog. Eyewitnesses noted that the 'Sedov' had issued two warning signals prior to the collision, a rarity for vessels at anchor. The impact resulted in significant damage to the fore part of the cog. Fortunately, units from the KNRM were in close proximity and responded promptly to assist. The status of any injuries remains uncertain, though an ambulance was dispatched to the port of Oudeschild following the incident.
