Collision in Singapore Strait Leads to Minor Oil Spill from Kota Tenaga
On the night of January 4, 2012, the cargo ship 'Kota Tenaga,' which was traveling from Singapore to Kolkata, collided with the vessel 'Seeb' approximately 2.7 kilometers south of Pulau Sebarok, in the busy Strait of Singapore. The impact resulted in a minor oil spill from the 'Kota Tenaga,' prompting a swift response to mitigate environmental damage. The vessel was relocated to Raffles Reserved Anchorage, where oil containment measures were initiated, including the deployment of an oil boom. In total, 12 response craft were mobilized to monitor the situation and assist with the clean-up efforts. To address the spill, non-toxic and biodegradable oil dispersants were utilized to break down patches of oil detected near Pulau Pawai, Pulau Senang, and the Raffles Reserved Anchorage. Estimates indicate that around 5 metric tonnes of marine fuel oil entered the waters of the Strait of Singapore. Fortunately, vessel traffic in both the port and the surrounding strait was not disrupted by the incident.
