On April 17, 2016, while navigating from Osaka, the LNG carrier 'Sevilla Knutsen' experienced a grounding incident when it collided with an uncharted small islet or atoll en route to Australia. The accident resulted in extensive damage to the vessel's bow, leaving a substantial crack that extended from the aft to the prow, and in some sections, compromised the integrity of its double hull, leading to water ingress. Fortunately, the crew's expertise and timely actions averted a potentially catastrophic situation by managing the ballast tanks effectively. Following the grounding, the tanker made its way to Guanon on April 18, where the presence of an American Naval Base complicated matters. Although the US military offered the use of a helicopter for crew evacuation, access to the naval base was ultimately denied. With the assistance of an American frigate for safe passage, the 'Sevilla Knutsen' continued on to Cebu, where it arrived on April 24 to undergo necessary repairs.
