Search Underway After Ferry Collision in Sunda Strait
On April 22, 2019, at approximately 4:30 p.m., the ferry 'Windu Karsa Dwitya' collided with the 'Virgo 18' (IMO: 8921755) about 1.5 miles from Merak port in the Sunda Strait. The 'Windu Karsa Dwitya' was on its voyage from Merak to Bakauheni, while the 'Virgo 18' was making its approach towards the port. Both vessels operate on the Merak-Bakauheni ferry route. Following the collision, one crew member from the 'Windu Karsa Dwitya' fell overboard and remains missing, while another passenger sustained injuries and was transported to Krakatau Steel Hospital shortly after the vessel docked at Pier 1 in Merak. Thankfully, all other passengers were safely evacuated. The 'Windu Karsa Dwitya' sustained significant damage to its starboard side bridge wing, with breaches and dents reported on the foredeck hull. The 'Virgo 18' also incurred damage, particularly to its port-side stern, and subsequently docked at Merak.
