On December 24, 2019, the tanker 'Istanul' faced a piracy threat when it was targeted by a high-speed skiff manned by nine armed attackers. The incident occurred in the Gulf of Guinea, specifically at coordinates 01°47'N 004°28'E, approximately 180 nautical miles southwest of Brass. Thanks to the crew's swift evasive tactics, the pirates made two failed attempts to board the vessel before retreating to what is believed to be a mothership. Fortunately, both the crew and the 'Istanul' emerged unscathed and were able to continue their journey without further incident. Following the thwarted attack, a suspected pirate mothership was reported to be operating in the Gulf of Guinea. Two speedboats were observed nearing a chemical products tanker, suspected of serving as the pirates' operational hub. This potential mother vessel is thought to be the Nigerian-flagged chemical tanker 'Adeline Jumbo' (IMO: 9712424), previously linked to piracy incidents, including the theft of cargo from the 'Pantelena' just 27 miles northwest of Port Libreville on August 18.
