On August 28, 2017, a critical medical evacuation was carried out about 10 nautical miles off Point Conception, California, involving a Ukrainian crewmember from the bulk carrier 'Sheila Ann.' The individual suffered a severe hand injury, prompting the vessel's crew to immediately alert the Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach around 5:50 p.m. Following a consultation with the flight surgeon, the Coast Guard deployed an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Forward Operating Base Mugu for the rescue operation. Upon arriving at the scene, the helicopter crew successfully hoisted the injured man aboard and transported him to Santa Barbara Municipal Airport. There, emergency medical services were on standby to provide further care, and the injured crewmember was subsequently taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.
