Tragic Collision at Sea: Cargo Ship Claims Lives of Two Fishermen Off Japan's Coast

Feb 23, 2026 09:31

A devastating maritime incident occurred on February 20, 2026, around 1 p.m. when the cargo vessel 'Shinei Maru' collided with the recreational fishing boat 'Kousei Maru' off the coast of Kunizakicho, Japan. The 'Shinei Maru', which had just finished unloading steel at Kinuura Port and was en route to Kurashiki Port, was carrying five crew members when it struck the 16-ton 'Kousei Maru', which was occupied by 13 individuals, including the captain. The fishing boat, engaged in a half-day excursion near Toba City, had just anchored approximately 10-15 minutes before the tragic event. The weather conditions were calm, with clear visibility. Eyewitnesses reported that the cargo ship sounded its horn in an attempt to signal the fishermen before the impact occurred, which was severe enough to cleave the fishing boat in two. Following the collision, all 12 fishermen and the captain were thrown into the water. Fortunately, they were all wearing life jackets, which likely aided in the rescue efforts. The Japanese Coast Guard and nearby fishing boats quickly responded, successfully retrieving 12 of the individuals from the water. Initially, one fisherman was reported missing but was located after an hour. Unfortunately, two of the fishermen were found in cardiac arrest. Despite immediate medical attention at a hospital, both were pronounced dead, identified as a 60-year-old and an 85-year-old man. Additionally, five individuals sustained serious injuries, while two others suffered minor injuries, including the captain of the 'Kousei Maru'. Authorities immediately detained the 'Shinei Maru' at the incident scene for inspection. Reports suggest that the ship's captain was not at the helm during the crash. Subsequently, the Japan Coast Guard arrested the Second Officer, Hanon Sugimoto, aged 21, for negligence resulting in death and endangering maritime traffic. The cargo ship was then directed to Nagoya Port for further investigations by the Japan Coast Guard and the Japan Transport Safety Board, where it docked on February 21. On February 23, the vessel continued its voyage to Shimizu.
