Containers Lost at Sea Due to Storm Therese Near Lanzarote
In a dramatic incident on March 20, 2026, twelve containers were lost from the cargo ship 'Aquarius' while navigating the waters off Lanzarote, approximately 24 nautical miles northwest of Tinajo. The vessel was en route from Huelva to Las Palmas when severe weather conditions associated with Storm Therese led to a hazardous shift in the deck load, resulting in some containers going overboard and others being compromised. The Las Palmas Maritime Authority swiftly initiated a specialized monitoring protocol to keep track of the drifting cargo. Due to prevailing currents, the lost containers were headed north and were nearly submerged. To ensure the safety of maritime navigation in the region, reconnaissance aircraft were deployed and satellite imagery requested to monitor the containers’ trajectory, while safety alerts were sent to other vessels in the Canary Islands maritime corridor. The cargo that was lost primarily consisted of various goods, including water, beer, and general merchandise such as furniture and household items. After the incident, the 'Aquarius' successfully navigated to the OPSCA-MSC Terminal in Las Palmas with the assistance of the tug 'VB Adriatico' (IMO: 9201011) and has been stationary there since March 23 due to extensive structural damage sustained during the storm. Consequently, the freighter has been taken out of service until further assessments can be made. This unfortunate event poses a significant challenge for port operations, especially since the containers were completely filled. The 'Aquarius', which was only commissioned by Alisios Shipping Lines in September 2025 to enhance its transport capacity, is now faced with operational hurdles as the situation unfolds.
