In a groundbreaking achievement, a convoy of Russian vessels has successfully traversed the Northern Sea Route from east to west during the winter months, marking a significant milestone in maritime navigation. This historic journey, overseen by Sovcomflot—a global leader in shipping—began its expedition on December 21, 2016, in the Bering Strait and concluded on January 3, 2017, in Ob Bay within the Kara Sea. The fleet covered an impressive distance of approximately 2,400 miles, navigating through the challenges posed by the polar night and harsh ice formations. The convoy comprised various vessels, including the Shturman Ovtsyn shuttle tanker and the motorships Audax and Arctic-1, all escorted by the powerful nuclear icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy from FSUE Atomflot. The Shturman Ovtsyn was specifically commissioned by Sovcomflot under a long-term agreement with Gazprom Neft, primarily serving to transport crude oil from the Yamal Peninsula to the port of Murmansk during the annual navigation period. Registered under the Russian flag, the vessel maintains its home port in St. Petersburg. This achievement illustrates the expanding capabilities of maritime operations in extreme conditions.
