Supply Vessel Sjøborg Collides with Statfjord A Oil Platform, Prompting Rapid Evacuation

Jun 07, 2019 09:38

In the early hours of June 7, 2019, a significant maritime incident occurred when the supply vessel “Sjøborg,” carrying a crew of 12, collided with the Norwegian oil platform “Statfjord A” at 1:55 a.m. Following the collision, an emergency evacuation operation was executed swiftly, resulting in the evacuation of 218 personnel within just 40 minutes using helicopters. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported for either the platform staff or the crew of the supply vessel, and importantly, there were no oil spills associated with the incident. At the time of the accident, the “Statfjord A” was not operational as it was undergoing a loading procedure. The impact was severe enough to damage the section of the platform housing its lifeboats, but the situation was managed promptly. The “Sjøborg” was able to navigate under its own power towards Mongstad for a thorough inspection following the collision. Equinor has since initiated an assessment to determine the extent of the damage inflicted on the “Statfjord A.” While the evacuation was taking place, there were still 58 personnel remaining on the platform. The evacuated individuals were transferred via two search and rescue (SAR) helicopters and an additional helicopter from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) at Sola to the neighboring platforms, including “Statfjord B,” “Statfjord C,” and “Gullfaks A.” To conduct a damage survey on the “Statfjord A,” the vessel “Stril Herkules” (IMO: 9404259) was deployed.
