In an unusual twist of maritime events, a stowaway monkey was discovered aboard the 'Skagen Maersk' upon its arrival at the Port of Felixstowe on June 14, 2011, after a journey that began on May 27 from Malaysia. Crew members raised the alarm about the macaque monkey shortly after leaving port, which led to swift action from Suffolk Trading Standards officers. Due to stringent UK rabies regulations, which dictate that monkeys can only be imported through designated airports with an import license and a six-month quarantine, the presence of the monkey at Felixstowe posed a significant legal issue. The Port of Felixstowe is not authorized for animal imports, meaning that bringing the monkey ashore constituted an offense. Dedicated Suffolk Trading Standards personnel collaborated with Animal Health and the UK Border Agency to ensure the safe transport of the monkey. The plan is to relocate her to the Wales Ape and Monkey Sanctuary located in Caehopkin, near Swansea, ensuring the stowaway receives proper care and attention.
