89 Passengers Safely Evacuated from Grounded 'Skorpios II'

Feb 06, 2015 10:37

Early in the morning of February 5, 2015, the tour vessel 'Skorpios II', carrying 89 passengers and 31 crew members, ran aground near Maillén in Punta Santo Domingo, just 14 kilometers southwest of Puerto Montt. The incident occurred at approximately 6:20 a.m., prompting an immediate response from local maritime authorities. The 5th Naval District received the alert around 6:45 a.m. and quickly mobilized assets to assist in the situation. The passengers, who were predominantly foreign tourists enjoying a sightseeing trip through the stunning fjords and the San Rafael Glacier, were safely transferred onto the Chilean patrol boat 'Micalvi' around 3 p.m. They were subsequently transported to the Navy Pier in Tenglo on another patrol vessel, 'Contramaestre Micalvi'. Additionally, the patrol boat 'Defender' from Arcángel was dispatched to the scene. A Super Puma helicopter and a Skymaster aircraft were also deployed to monitor the incident from the air. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or environmental spills associated with the grounding. The 'Skorpios II' was perched high and dry on a rocky shoreline, with hopes that it would be refloated as the tide rose later in the day.
