The vessel had become lodged in the Karnaphuli River mouth, situated between Buoy No. 1 and Buoy No. 3, while navigating from outer anchorage to jetty No. 9. The incident occurred around 1 p.m. as the Hanjin Semarang, carrying a cargo load of 528 containers, attempted to circumvent a docked barge by steering closer to the channel's edge. A tugboat played a crucial role in aiding the recovery of the stranded vessel, ensuring safe passage into the port.

On December 23, 2011, the container vessel "Hanjin Semarang" experienced a grounding situation when it became lodged on a shoal at the Chittagong Sea Port entrance, located at the confluence of the Karnaphuli River. The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. local time. Fortunately, the vessel was anticipated to be refloated during the upcoming high tide, expected around midnight. Importantly, this grounding did not disrupt the shipping movement within the port's operations. The "Hanjin Semarang" was en route from Port Klang, carrying over 800 containers destined for import.
