Collision Incident Involves Snoekgracht in Kiel Canal
On August 29, 2012, at 06:45 a.m., a significant maritime incident occurred in the Kiel Canal involving the Dutch cargo vessel m/v 'BBS Star' and the bulk carrier 'Snoekgracht'. The collision took place near the Rüsterbergen pilot station after the 'BBS Star' experienced unexpected rudder damage shortly after its departure from the port of Rendsburg. This unforeseen issue caused the vessel to veer off course, ultimately leading to a collision with the eastbound 'Snoekgracht', which sustained damage to its bulwark. Following an examination conducted at the Kiel-Holtenau lock, authorities permitted the 'Snoekgracht' to resume its journey to St. Petersburg, having originated from Bremen. Conversely, the 'BBS Star' suffered significant structural damage, with a 50-meter section along its port side compromised, resulting in water ingress. Consequently, the ship was forced to halt its voyage to Avonmouth, stopping at Brunsbüttel to unload its grain cargo for comprehensive inspections.
