Freighter Runs Aground Near Les Sables-d'Olonne: Quick Recovery by Tugboats
On December 19, 2019, at approximately 9:30 a.m., the freighter 'Arklow Fortune' encountered severe difficulties while navigating the approach channel of Les Sables-d'Olonne. After departing from Gijón, the vessel found itself grounded on the breakwater’s embankment, pushed off course by strong wind gusts that forced its bow towards the Chaume amidst turbulent waves. Thanks to the prompt assistance from the Atlantic Miniplon 'Scaphandre' and several other tugboats, the situation was swiftly managed. Within an hour, the freighter was successfully refloated and securely berthed. However, the vessel sustained some damage due to the grounding incident. Following repairs, 'Arklow Fortune' resumed its journey, arriving in La Coruña on December 25 at 6:20 a.m. and departing again on December 26 at 5:30 p.m., en route to Thameshaven, with an estimated time of arrival set for December 1, 2020.
