Freighter 'Sommen' Encounters Trouble Twice in Kiel Canal

Feb 06, 2025 10:35

In an incident that occurred on February 5, 2025, the freighter 'Sommen', en route from Aveiro to Avedøre, found itself in a precarious situation while navigating the Kiel Canal. The vessel first ran aground at Oldenbüttel at 2:08 a.m., colliding with the southern embankment at canal kilometer 40. This minor mishap damaged dolphin 5, but the crew managed to extricate the ship from the embankment. Initially, authorities imposed a navigation ban while technicians addressed the electronic issues that were pinpointed as the cause of the incident. Just 27 kilometers down the canal, near the Rade Canal Bridge, the situation deteriorated as the 'Sommen' reported an engine failure at 6:05 a.m. and again collided with the southern embankment at canal kilometer 67.3, precisely at location 54° 20' N 009° 43' E, close to Schacht-Audorf. The Kiel Canal traffic control center deemed it unsafe for the vessel to proceed without assistance, prompting the call for tug support. The tug 'Parat' (IMO: 8128212) was dispatched from Kiel, while the additional SFK-tug 'Holtenau' (IMO: 8200321) also made its way to the incident site. The 'Holtenau' arrived around 10 a.m. solidifying the recovery efforts. Thankfully, other vessels were able to navigate the area with caution since the 'Sommen' was grounded outside of the main fairway. By 11:15 a.m., the combined efforts of the tugs successfully freed the 'Sommen' from the embankment and towed it toward Kiel. The freighter was safely berthed at the Voith Quay in the North Port around 1 p.m. UTC for further investigations. Eventually, the 'Sommen' resumed its journey at 3:30 a.m. UTC on February 6.
