On October 15, 2019, at approximately 9 p.m., the drill ship 'Sonangol Quenguela' was apprehended nine miles off the coast of Tanjung Balau. The vessel was detected navigating through Malaysian waters without the essential permits required for such passage. The ship carried a crew of 43 individuals at the time of its detention. According to Section 491B (1) (l) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952, operating without the necessary authorization may result in hefty penalties, including fines reaching 100,000 ringgits (around $24,000), or potential imprisonment of up to two years.
