On May 4, 2016, a 29-year-old mariner was successfully rescued from the Southeastern Pacific Ocean by the vessel 'Nikkei Verde' and subsequently transported safely to Honolulu. The survivor recounted how he and three companions launched their journey from Colombia over two months prior, only to be left adrift when their skiff's engine failed. To stay alive during this harrowing period, he had to resort to catching fish and seagulls. Tragically, three of his companions did not survive the ordeal; their bodies were not found onboard when the Nikkei Verde's crew located the skiff. However, the survivor did manage to return their passports to the authorities. While the Coast Guard played a vital role in his rescue, it was noted that no investigation would be conducted regarding the survivor's circumstances, as they fell outside the agency’s jurisdiction.
