Miraculous Rescue: Nikkei Verde Saves Mariner After Two Months Adrift at Sea
On May 4, 2016, a 29-year-old mariner was successfully rescued from the Southeastern Pacific Ocean by the vessel 'Nikkei Verde' and subsequently transported safely to Honolulu. After enduring a grueling two-month ordeal at sea, the mariner arrived in good health aboard a Coast Guard small boat. The operation was executed by the Coast Guard 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Station Honolulu, which facilitated the man's transfer from the 'Nikkei Verde' to their base, where emergency services were on standby to assist him further. The drama began on April 26 when the crew of the 'Nikkei Verde', while en route to China, reported to the Honolulu Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) that they had found a man stranded on a 23-foot skiff. At the time of the rescue, they were approximately 2,150 miles southeast of Hilo, still under the Coast Guard’s area of search and rescue jurisdiction. After bringing the mariner onboard, the crew sought medical advice regarding his condition. Guided by a Coast Guard flight surgeon, the crew underwent coordination efforts for a safe transfer of the survivor back to Honolulu. The Colombian consul in San Francisco played a crucial role in organizing the necessary support, ensuring transportation, Customs clearance, accommodation, medical care, and an escort were all arranged prior to the man's arrival. The survivor recounted how he and three companions launched their journey from Colombia over two months prior, only to be left adrift when their skiff's engine failed. To stay alive during this harrowing period, he had to resort to catching fish and seagulls. Tragically, three of his companions did not survive the ordeal; their bodies were not found onboard when the Nikkei Verde's crew located the skiff. However, the survivor did manage to return their passports to the authorities. While the Coast Guard played a vital role in his rescue, it was noted that no investigation would be conducted regarding the survivor's circumstances, as they fell outside the agency’s jurisdiction.
