On February 4, 2019, at 09:35 a.m., the CROSS Reunion Island received an urgent notification from the tanker "STI Guard" regarding a severe incident onboard. The ship's captain had sustained critical injuries, suffering two stab wounds to the thorax during an altercation. The assailant was promptly subdued and isolated by the crew. At the time of the incident, the vessel was navigating en route from Ust-Luga to Singapore, approximately 300 nautical miles southwest of Reunion Island, making it out of reach for helicopter assistance. Given the critical condition of the injured captain, immediate evacuation was deemed essential. In response, the vessel was rerouted to Reunion Island, and the crew administered first aid under the guidance of the CCMM's medical professional to stabilize the captain's condition. The BRAVO OSCAR helicopter, dispatched from the SAG (CORG), successfully reached the tanker on February 5 at 6 a.m., located 20 miles west of the island, to transfer the medical team. With favorable weather conditions, the team was able to carry out the evacuation, and the helicopter landed at CHU Félix Guyon hospital in Bellepierre around 7:30 a.m. A relief captain was then transported aboard the "STI Guard" by a rescue boat from Saint-Gilles. As the incident unfolded in international waters, jurisdiction for the investigation and subsequent legal actions was handed to the flag state.
