On May 31, 2017, the Indian Coast Guard’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai received an urgent distress signal from the British Virgin Islands-registered sailing vessel 'Lady Thuraya'. The yacht was en route from Male to Salalah, Oman, and found itself over 590 miles away from Mumbai in troubling circumstances. In response to the distress alert, the ICG initiated an 'International Safety Net', urging nearby vessels to assist in locating the stricken yacht. By June 3, the merchant vessel 'Seacor Diamond', traveling from Mtwara to Al Jazeera, successfully established radio contact with 'Lady Thuraya' via VHF, guided by MRCC throughout the process. Success came when the yacht was located approximately 390 miles from Mumbai. The crew of four aboard 'Lady Thuraya' was confirmed safe and in good health, although the yacht had suffered engine failure, leaving it without power for three days. Prompt assistance was rendered, and the 'Seacor Diamond' took the yacht in tow, with an expected arrival in Mumbai by June 8.
